The Lancia B20GT was introduced in 1951 creating an immediate sensation. Costing £1000 more than a Jaguar D Type the B20GT was a car of great style, being based on an initial design by Boano that was later refined and put into production by Pininfarina, and was the first car to utilise a V6 power unit. Soon after its introduction came racing success, the B20GT finishing second overall on the Miglia Mille followed by a class victory at Le Mans (finishing 12th overall) and a stunning 1,2,3 in the Targa Florio followed by a high profile win in the Leige Rome Leige Rally.
5 CMY is one of 25 B20GT's delivered to the UK new in RHD specification and it is thought that in the 4th series of cars only 6 RHD cars were delivered new to England. The car offered here is a 4th series B20GT, notable changes from the third series being a De dion rear end creating more predictable handling and the most powerful engine of any of the B20GT's with a 2.5l aluminium unit providing 118BHP. 5 CMY was subject to a full rebuild in the early 90’s by the then owner who had acquired the car in 1986. A number of photos of the rebuild as well as invoices accompany the car. The engine was fully rebuilt with all new bearings, pistons, valves etc. by well known Lancia B20 expert Tim Burrett. The rebuild incorporated a Nardi camshaft and standard 40 DC2 carburettor, giving better mid to top end performance. The gearbox received new first and reverse gears, all new bearings and a new clutch. Another desirable accessory is the Nardi floor shift that is most commonly seen on the Lancia B24 Spyder.
The most recent owners did a great deal of work to the car in order to make it suitable for historic winter rallying. Rebuilding the steering box, all new bilstein shock absorbers, relined brake drums, and importantly for winter rallying a rebuilt heater. Incorporated into the cockpit was a rally clock and a Tripmaster. 5 CMY has competed in many historic rallies and has been feature in many articles as well as on the front cover of La Vie de L’auto in the 2004 Neige et Glace.
